Gudrid Hansdóttir’s work is a stirring mix of contemporary classical music and rural inspired folk, combining songs of English language with bewitching fables in her native Faroese tongue, an insular Nordic language spoken by fewer than 50,000 people.
Northern Latitudes was inspired by two field recordings made by Chris Watson for a CD called ‘The Sea Ice Border’. It comprises of two recordings: 89 24 N Below and 89 24 N Above. Both feature in the mix at the beginning and end. The music in between was chosen based on the feel of those sounds.
