How does Harriet Bartlett manage to play all those triplets in Dick Gossip's at such a fantastic speed?

I wouldn't even be able to think them at that speed.

    Found it.

She plays the same note with the 3rd, 2nd, and 1st fingers in quick succession. That requires real accuracy.
    Thank you Google

I think that that is really a meedja corruption of the reality.

If you are singing unaccompanied harmonies within a group, unless you are very good, very young, or well practised, it is often quite difficult to hear your self amongst the other voices, so some singers are often seen cupping a hand behind their ear to improve the sound reception of their own voice. It really does work - you try it while listening to the radio.

To be really effective though, you have to wear an Aran cable knit sweater at the same time.

Nothing to add to Bob's explanation, it really does work. Certainly used to see it being done a lot and not just by local singers in the pubs and clubs. Martin Carthy is one famous name that I recall doing it. I rather think that, at least as far as stage work goes, the ubiquity of the monitor speaker has pretty much reduced the need for it.

Ah yes, the Aran sweaters. Heavy, itchy and fearsomely hot when worn in any folk club worthy of its name. The Clancy Brothers have a lot to answer for!

They certainly have...I still laugh when I see a video of them all knitted up.

Which might lead you to think that Knitters Jig are named thus because of wooly pulleys - but no! They hail from an area of Leicester famous for knitting. I can't remember if they had foldback monitors, but they didn't cup an ear or stick a finger in. Not one duff note either.

I did wonder. Apparently knitting is making a big comeback. When I went into a Borders Store in Bristol last week they were even running a knitting club as it was getting so popular....you never know...

Knit one, Pearl one, Clickerty Click....maybe the title for a new "Knitting Shanty" song ? I guess with winter looming and the global credit crunch we'll all have to start making our own clothes again, grow our own vegetables etc. So - did you join the knitting club???
