    Linseed oil paint is supposed to be very good, as the pigment soaks into the wood, but I'm not sure about on previously painted surfaces, so will investigate and come back here later.

    Edit:-Linseed oil paint is used by the Holkham Estate in Norfolk, and they sell their own product.
    Lots of information here, but I've never used it, so can't really offer any factual comment.

    I ended up using professional sign painters oil base enamel. And the sign painter got me this stuff called 'sign clear coat' designed for outdoor signs. Said it should last 20 years! I'll post another pic when everything is done and they are hung. Meanwhile I'll put up a pic of one painted shutter.
