    Thumbs up Current playlist favourites

Had a look around and couldn't see one these type of threads, so I thought I'd start one. This is allegedly the board "For news and discussion about Folk Radio UK shows and music played", but if it's better suited elsewhere I'm sure Alex can move it to the appropriate place...

Anyway, this thread is a place to give a mention to the artists and/or tracks you've especially enjoyed from the playlist recently. For example...

I was very pleased to hear Show of Hands this week, and "Roots" in particular today. It was one of the tracks that really drew me toward folky stuff, and never fails to get my fingers tapping.

I think it must be the raucous brass. I like my brass mellow.

Wouldn't do for us all to like the same, I s'pose.
I also struggled with them when I first heard them on Jools Holland. But they have grown on me a lot. Hearing Brass in folk always sounds a bit foreign I suppose.

Do you prefer some of the Brass Monkey stuff?

yes, it's not quite as dissonant as Bellowhead, but it's still a bit too brassy for me.

I think it must be a personal thing. Maybe I was frightened by a trumpet when I was a babe in arms

Although I've grown to like some acts that use brass it has taken me a while so I do understand where you're coming from. The Unusual Suspects was another big band that took a while for me to like, although they have more Celtic/Jazz fusion.

Also, what's interesting is that those bands never did well on votes on the station and it's only recently that they have started to attract more positive votes so I dare say it's a common sentiment.

    Default Brass

To add to the debate, I actually think it may be just the particular arrangements that are strident. But it still may be an age thing, too! Me and Bob like a narrative and a melody.

Just personally, both Spiers and Boden and Bellowhead are better in real than recorded, for me. Mind you, that applies to lots of acts. You get the edge.

You'll get to hear the rest of that album at Christmas! Lovely album...took several weeks to order it and it only just arrived in time for the Festive songs I play for Christmas on here....it was a close call mate...also one of my favourite albums...he was an amazing man as well, a very sad loss.

What a beautiful clip hey? He had a great sense of humour as does Phil. Always feel sad after watching it though. Bit like the Martyn Bennett video in which he is playing pipes...also on the main site... ( you can spot Phil as well in the line up...here)

You don't get talent like that anymore...(a very biased view I know, but that's how I feel when I watch those videos..it's great to be able to share them)
