Ewan MacColl Re-Mixed! Print E-mail
Wednesday, 30 April 2008

ImageMost of you will have heard of the Radio Ballads, created by Ewan MacColl, Charles Parker and Peggy Seeger. They were afterall revolutionary in concept. Charles Parker produced the original Radio Ballads series which documented the life of every-day men and women as told in their own words. Those words were interspersed with song influenced by those experiences.

Ewan MacColl, folksinger and activist, was commissioned by Charles to write the script and it was Ewan that persuaded Charles Parker to use the field recordings after seeing the strength and power that only the original voice could put across to radio audiences.

Although attention was placed upon the series back in 2006 following the production of a new set of Radio Ballads, the limelight is to fall upon them yet again, be it in a slightly different way...

ImageFast forward to 2008 and "Broadcaster". The newest signing to the Red Grape label. "Broadcaster" and friend, "Doktor Music", were locked away in a room for several long nights and they produced something all together unexpected.

The resulting EP "Primary Transmissions" will have people dancing to Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger...it overlays techno and dance beats with samples from the original Radio Ballads...it's certainly original although they give a fair nod in the direction to Moby and Fat Boy Slim who are no strangers to the concept of re-mixing archive material.

It's not going to shake the folk world...it may well ruffle a few feathers of those old cockerels who like to have a good old peck at anything that re-touches traditional music, but the thought of people dancing to the voices of Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger brings a great big smile to my face. I listened to the promo on the way into work this morning and I enjoyed it, as I'm sure will the Party People!
