Richard Grainger - War Horse Print E-mail
Friday, 29 February 2008

ImageThis is a great album, reminiscent of legends such as Nic Jones and Martin Carthy but with Richard's own hallmarks throughout. "War Horse" is great classic folk album that will survive the test of time. The biggest surprise for me was when I found myself thumbing to the sleevenotes to find out which famous folk singer wrote the tracks I was listening to, only to find they had been written by Richard! This is truly impressive song-writing from a man who loves this land and sea. A folk singer and musician of the highest degree!

Bio and info:

Richard Grainger is a singer and songwriter steeped in the Northumbrian and English Folk Traditions. As a teenager he represented his native Cleveland ( North East Coast of Yorkshire) at an EFDSS National Gathering at Cecil Sharp House in London. He became a member of the widely popular 'Teesside Fettlers' for 3 years. He started his recording career in 1986 with an album on Fellside Records ( FE038) titled 'Herbs on the Heart' which received wide critical acclaim. The leading Folk Mag of the time hailed him as 'the new Carthy or Nic Jones'.

Today, after nearly twenty years in the business, he is acknowledged as one of the finest exponents of folk song in the UK and has gone much further than many of his contemporaries . Richard is a guitar player and has evolved his own unique approach to accompaniment. With more than a dozen albums to his credit,he is North Yorks and Teessides most prolific writer since Graeme Miles. Richards latest CD Album 'Warhorse' is to be released in June. It prove's Richards enthusiasm and sheer connection to his music has never diminished but continues to grow stronger. Richard takes his music around the world, composed 4 productions for the stage, written some British folk 'classics', has recorded more than 12 CD's, appeared on TV and radio. He's got a sense of humour too and is widely acknowledged for his introductions which turn into fascinating and often hilarious stories in their own right. Richard is touring now from his base on the North York Moors in Northern England and plans to continue to get his music performed before a much larger audience. If he's down your way- don't miss him he's one of the strongest 'folk-roots' performers around.
