Sleeve Notes:Malthouse Passage play for concerts and English ceilidhs. The band is named after an alleyway in London that features in the 1960's cult film, The Plank.
New Rigged Ship/Trip to Durrow A slight variation of an old favourite Shetland tune to start off our debut CD with a bang. Trip to Durrow is a tune picked up by Dave from the playing of the fabulous Clare concertina player, Noel Hill.
Now Welcome Summer Geoffrey Chaucer's joyous anthem celebrating coming summer has not been surpassed over the last 600 years!
Kentra Bay/Beer & Black Pudding A beautiful, haunting air by Dave, inspired when gazing out over the Sound of Sleat, West Coast of Scotland. The second tune is reputed to be a musical response to a perfectly aimed Valentine's day gift. (Booze and food are obviously the way to this bloke's heart...)
Bath Time Bourree/Chassepain Bath Time was written by former band member Jan Lucas, who wrote the tune to accompany Gilles Chabenat's classic.
Seasons A song penned to celebrate the beauty of our local scenery as it changes throughout the year, seen from many walks along the Malvern Hills. Predictably it has four verses and the recurring riff owes more to Ry Cooder than Martin Carthy!
Johnson's/Sunshine Hornpipe Lisa first heard Johnson's as a reel, but she's been playing it as a whimsical hornpipe in sessions for many years now. Nick's hallmark wacky bass line sets the scene for these two quirky, but fun renditions.
Eklunda/Carl-Erik Berndt Polskas A couple of swirling Swedes.
Around the World for Sport/Horizonto Two 48-bar tunes given the Malthouse treatment. The second tune is from the playing of Blowzabella, who really know how to write fantastic tunes that send dancers (and musicians) into a Iather. This is a favourite dance set of ours, arranged here for a concert, a comfy armchair, or a bop around the kitchen table...
Never Look Back There are many folk songs lamenting having to leave friends and home in times of desperation. Alan wrote this by contrast to celebrate moving on without regret when the time is right...
Hailing Polka Cathy's a whizz on the musical central heating pipes ... This is a tune by the amazing Scandinavian group, Filarfolket, which lends itself magically to her wonderful plumbing.
Ides of March A manic and bizarre concoction from Roaring Jelly's Derek Pearce. Dave finally got us to get our musical heads round its peculiar twists and turns; we're now plotting to stab him to death to prevent him coming up with a sequel...
Molly tune/Aye Waukin' 0 An East Anglian Molly tune with no beginning and no end, but leads perfectly musically, if not geographically, into Robbie Burns' wonderful song of unrequited love - which needs no other introduction... {mos_fb_discuss:9}
