A Guide to Buying Folk and Alternative Music

We are no longer running a Music store due the time and effort involved in running the Folk Radio UK website which is now a full-time job. Where possible, please purchase directly from artists. We also recommend the following websites for your music needs (possibly a slowly growing list):

BANDCAMP: A great way to discover new music as well as supporting the artists you love as they operate a Fairtrade policy: Our share is 15% on digital items, and 10% on physical goods. Payment processor fees are separate and vary depending on the size of the transaction, but for an average size purchase, amount to an additional 4-7%. The remainder, usually 80-85%, goes directly to the artist, and we pay out daily.*

They also have a lot of features from Bandcamp Daily, Interviews, lists and more. One of the best ways to dicover new music is to follow others with similar tastes which you’ll discover as you buy music. We use it a lot, check our collection here.

We’re madly passionate about music, something we also recognise in Norman Records who specialise hard-to-find indie music, alternative music, experimental music, electronica as well as folk (especially the more alternative). Norman Records was born in 1995 when Phil set up the business in the attic of his terraced house in the Hyde Park area of Leeds. It’s something of an understatement to say it has grown a since then – but it’s usually where we buy our vinyl from.
