John Smith has shared the video for his new single, ‘Save My Life’, taken from his latest album Headlong which was released last year by BARP Ltd. In line with sharing the video, he has been confirmed for a support slot on tour with Gomez throughout April and May, including a stop at London’s Royal Albert Hall on May 3, 2018 (dates below).
In our interview with John in October, he revealed how his approach to this album was very different to the in-depth preparation for Great Lakes. For this album, having handed over production duties to Sam Lakeman, he arrived at the studio with nothing other than his notebook and some ideas. “I think musically it’s as minimal as Great Lakes, perhaps more so. I try to go with ‘less is more’ in everything that I do really, so I wanted to keep stripping things off; we’d record things then pull them back just to keep it as tight as possible. We let go a bit on a few with drums and some strings, but not a whole lot. I think it’s probably a bit tighter than Great Lakes as a record, but I think a lot of that’s just from the economy of touring and gigging; you can’t carry too much, it weighs you down. I’ve been applying that approach, I suppose, to recording and writing.”
Despite being incredibly busy he managed to find the time to write the album while touring as a musician for the likes of Lianne La Havas and Lisa Hannigan (who fittingly lends a co-write to Headlong, on ‘Coming Home’). When not touring he’s often in the studio, he played on Martin Simpson’s last album ‘Trails and Tribulations’ and more recently he appeared on Whistle Down the Wind, the latest album from Joan Baez who is our current Artist of the Month.
