Watch Children (Don’t You Know), the new single from Katie Spencer, a progressive-folk singer-songwriter/guitarist inspired by the people and her surroundings in the Yorkshire countryside. Taken from her debut Mini-Album ‘Good Morning Sky’ (out 20th May), Katie shared the following about the song:
Children (Don’t You Know) was one of the first songs that I created, and it has followed me around ever since – pulling on my coat tails. So it was an obvious choice for a debut single release. I have a lot of good friends who are older than I am and this song is a sort of admiring mickey-take. It explores the idea that the child is ever-present in the adult, proving that age really is just a human construct when building relationships with people. Whenever I sing this I have a hilarious image of a good friend (old codger) chasing me for one last hug before leaving a music venue in Hull: beautiful! It was fun to record this track too, as we burrowed deeper into the meaning of the song (to be child-like vs. being childish). The dark and light are exaggerated, to show the contrast between youthfulness and age – whilst the electric guitar stumbles like a two-year-old, eventually reaching a soaring mature crescendo.
Her debut mini-album features some of Scotland’s best musicianship from Ted McKenna (drums – Rory Gallagher, SAHB), Foss Paterson (keys – John Martyn, Jethro Tull) and Fraser Speirs (harmonica). Don’t miss her upcoming live dates, see below.
