The BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award 2016 were recently announced on the Radio 2 Folk Show with Mark Radcliffe. So once again the annual search for the UK’s most talented young performers (soloists, duos and groups) of folk, roots or acoustic music is under way. The award has been a launchpad for plenty of exciting artists who grace this website and our radio channel including Bella Hardy, Blair Dunlop, Jackie Oates, Lucy Ward, Adam Holmes (Rura), Jim Moray and The Mischa Macpherson Trio.
The Young Folk Award is open to UK residents aged between 16-21. Details of how to enter are available via the BBC website by clicking here.
Ten successful entries will be invited to attend the Young Folk Award Weekend (29-31st January 2016) in Kendal – a residential weekend of workshops led by professional musicians and organisers. Here’s a clip of the behind the scenes film of the 2014 Young Folk Award Weekend.
On the Saturday evening there will be a concert open to the public, featuring a short performance from each act, from which a panel of judges will select four acts to become the nominees for the 2016 Young Folk Award. Those nominees will be invited to the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards ceremony in April 2016, where the winner will be announced.
The prize will include a session on the Radio 2 Folk Show, slots at three UK festivals in 2016, and one year’s membership of the Musicians’ Union.
The closing date for entries is the end of Friday 4th December 2015.
