The last time we played Woodenbox was under their lengthier title of Woodenbox with a Fistful of Fivers, I was completely hooked on the track Twisted Mile with its mariachi glockenspiel spaghetti western twist! It was original and a great rousing track that we discovered on TenTracks back in 2008…a great concept that seems to have lost the momentum it once had although it was through them that we discovered so many Scottish underground acts such as these and the likes of Foxgang. Although this post is about their new single ‘Courage’ I feel I’d be doing you a dis-service by not including ‘Twisted Mile’…so first:
Back to the single…Courage is taken from their second album End Game which will be released on 27th May 2013 via Olive Grove. You can grab the single now through bandcamp here.
On the album lead vocalist Ali said it was “created as a unit falling apart but looking to stay together. We believe so much in the music we are making and it is the first album we have written collaboratively.” Forthcoming single Courage is graceful and welcomes influences from heroes such as Scott Walker and Dennis Wilson, whilst “Roll For Me” (video below) displays the band’s melodic quirks and intricacies sharing modern, akin to the The Felice Brothers.
