Song number four, A Whole Life Lived is another of Chris’ fables that will speak very well for itself. It seems that the wisdom of age is that wisdom is still to be had, but anyone who has kids of teenage years and a little above will immediately identify with this song.
Again Chris’s own comment is brief, relating to time spent working with Dizraeli & The Small Gods. “I wrote this song while working with Dizraeli. He naturally thought the song was about him and took offence before, eventually, he realized it was actually about me.”
“I’m listening to a young man tell me stuff I know already in the knowledgeable tone I used to use. I struggle with indifference as the kid looks down on me and thinks I’m rude or, worse than rude, thinks I’m confused. He’s me of course, he’s not but he has some of what I had, when I was talking shite when youth was mine. Though there ain’t no mirror here I’m certain that I wear the frown my old man wore for more than half the time”
There’s something about the way that the words tumble out of this song that just possibly owes a little to the hip-hop that Dizraeli fuses with folk music too. But before we get into awkward and frowning territory, let’s just enjoy this for what it is… Sage, funny and once again beautifully played.
