Although not one to shout from the rooftops Steve Tilston is very much a living legend, born in Liverpool in 1950 he soaked up the musical spirit of that city and took it with him when he ventured to the big lights of London. It was thanks to the help of Wizz Jones that he got himself a late night spot at Les Cousins one of the most famous folk and blues clubs at the time in the basement of a restaurant in Greek Street, in Soho. The artists that played there ranked among the very best:
Alexis Korner, Ralph McTell, Sandy Denny, Bert Jansch, Alex Campbell, Wizz Jones, Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell, Nick Drake, Al Stewart, Long John Baldry, The Incredible String Band, John Martyn, Cat Stevens, Jackson C. Frank, Martin Carthy, Linda Thompson, Julie Felix, Bridget St John, Donovan, Bob Dylan, The Watersons, Arlo Guthrie, Stephane Grappelli & Diz Disley, Davey Graham, Spider John Koerner, Tom Rush….
That gig changed his life forever as it was following this that he decided to abandon his career as a graphic artist and hone his music skills. Rather than sign to a major label who were thirsty for new talent such as Steve he opted instead to sign with Bristol based ‘Village Thing’ a small label run by Ian A Anderson (the very same man who runs fRoots and hosts fRoots Radio which we feature on Folk Radio UK). His debut release was ‘An Acoustic Confusion’ released in 1971. The album received very memorable reviews with Melody Maker making it LP of the Month stating it showed “remarkable maturity and sophistication for a debut release”.
The albums that followed set him apart from many and Andy Kershaw summed him up brilliantly when talking about Steve on BBC Radio 3 in 2007:
“The Songwriters’ songwriter…one of the most consistently outstanding songwriters of his generation”
