Shrewsbury Folk Festival has sold all its adult weekend tickets with more than four months to go until the August Bank Holiday event. Saturday, Sunday and Monday day tickets have also all been snapped up, leaving just a handful of Friday day tickets left. The sell out breaks last year’s record when tickets sold out in the beginning of May.
This year’s festival, held at the County Showground in Berwick Road from August 24 to 27, features singer songwriter KT Tunstall, Richard Thompson, Kate Rusby, Show of Hands, Dervish and Blowzabella among the top headliners who will play the main venues between August 24 to 27.
Other acts include The Treacherous Orchestra, Plainsong, Vin Garbutt, Session A9, Jon Boden and the Remnant Kings, Fay Hield and the Hurricane Party, Lau, Faustus, Jackie Oates, Jim Moray, Karine Polwart, Jack Harris, Vamm, Rua MacMillan, The Wilsons, Gloworms, Miranda Sykes & Rex Preston, Monty’s Maggot, and Randolph Matthews & Byron Johnston.
Anxo Lorenzo, a Spanish musician who plays the Galician Bagpipes, will lead the foreign artists that will also see the American Sweetback Sisters return after their successful 2011 debut, Abigail Washburn from Nashville, Americans Diana Jones and Caroline Herring, Canada’s Old Man Luedecke, Texas based Jonathon Byrd, Baskery, a Swedish blues/southern rock band and Canadian duo Madison Violet.
Festival Director Alan Surtees said he was delighted with another huge show of support for Shrewsbury.
“It is a huge coup to sell out adult weekend tickets, more than four months in advance of the festival, at a time when other festivals are struggling or even folding.
“But we don’t take anything for granted and will be working hard in the run up to the festival to make sure we deliver four fantastic days of music, dance and entertainment. “
This year’s festival has continued to appeal to foreign visitors with ticket sales being bought in France, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, Sweden, Canada, the US and Australia.
It also has a strong local fan base with 30% of tickets going to Shropshire and the West Midlands.
