Valgeir Sigurðsson recently finished scoring The Architecture of Loss, a dance piece by celebrated choreographer Stephen Petronio. The title is both a celebration and a complaint about the Stephen’s work:
“The thing about dance that is so beautiful is that it disappears the minute that you see it…
and the frustrating thing about dance is that it disappears the minute that you see it.
As a dancemaker I’m quite jealous of my visual artist friends and my friends that have a plastic object at the end of their day
All I have is a memory of what I did”
The piece sees its world premiere tonight, March 6, at New York’s Joyce Theatre where it will run until March 11. The evening also includes City of Twist, a 2002 collaboration with artist/composer Laurie Anderson. Tickets here.
Valgeir’s score features contributions from Nico Muhly and is performed live by Valgeir with longtime Bedroom Community collaborators Shahzad Ismaily and Nadia Sirota.
