Anyone that has listened to Folk Radio UK long enough will have heard Sean Hayes. He is still a name that sits out there on the fringe yet his music has been widely re-mixed and used in clubs from Milan to Thailand. The man is a genuine troubadour who started at the bottom, his music began to spread by word of mouth and he is still considered an underground artist by many today.
We first came across him in 2004 when he released Alabama Chicken which was recorded in the living room of an incredible “gingerbread house” at the top of Mill Valley, CA. Little Baby Star (2006) is probably his most well known for it’s richley laden hooks that made it an instant hit for fans. It wasn’t until 2007 that he recorded an album in the studio with ‘Flowering Spade’ and to bring it all to life he called in ‘Ches Smith, Shahzad Ismaily, Devin Hoff, Todd Roper, Ara Anderson, Rob Reich, and David Boyce from the avant garde jazz & post-rock scenes of NYC, LA and San Francisco’.
His latest release Outtakes & Alternatives is in many ways a celebration of his work to date. As the title suggests it features outtakes & alternative takes. It is a collection of songs recorded from 2005 to 2011. Some songs are outtakes from album sessions that didn’t make the cut for that album. The last three tracks are alternate versions of songs that have been released on previous LPs. We’ve included two free tracks from the album below:
