Few guitarists transcend genre and style, but Brooks Williams has made a career of it. His music is a fearlessly evolving melange of intricate blues-soaked finger-style guitar and soulful singing. He defies categorisation. Brooks Williams is blessed with multiple talents, merging acoustic guitar wizardry with the singer-songwriter tradition and has been hailed as an acoustic guitar god a one man wonder and the Angel of Soul. A consummate artist, Williams ranks among America’s musical treasures. (Dirty Linen) His latest CD The Time I Spend with You is a high-energy, up-beat recording of rootsy originals, blues classics and finger-picked instrumentals (the title track actually written in the UK); a very personal recording it shows an artist at ease with his musical roots, but more than that, a musician who simply loves the music he plays; rooted in the blues but as fresh as any music you are likely to hear.
He’s passionate about passing it on to the next generation of guitarists too; his workshops and master-classes as legendary as his concerts; he’s a natural, inspirational teacher and his instructional DVD Guitar Groove: a Session with Brooks Williams in which he shares his unique approach to teaching is out now. It’s pleasantly difficult to pin down Brooks Williams; he’s a diverse and versatile musician who is quite simply one of the most entertaining and engaging performers on the circuit today. www.brookswilliams.com www.myspace.com/redguitarbluemusic

Terry Young and Sandra Swannell, from much-missed Canadian favourites Tanglefoot, return in a new guise, playing a ‘quirky fusion of folk and hayseed jazz’. Armed with virtuoso fiddle, finger-picking guitar and two strong voices, their blend of cool swing jazz, country blues and rural folk roots may be a departure from the Tanglefoot sound, but they promise a show packed with the same generous amounts of energy, charm and humour.

Adriano Adewale will be joined by two special guests: fellow Brazilian composer and multi instrumentalist, Marcelo Andrade and composer and guitarist, Jonathan Preiss (Caratinga). Together they will perform a special concert exploring the work of 20th century Afro-Brazilian composer Pixinguinha (1897-1973). Living in Rio de Janeiro, Pixinguinha’s compositions were mainly in a style known as Chorinho and he was one of the first composers to incorporate Jazz and Improvisation in Brazilian music.
Chorinho has many similarities to Baroque music, but with a distinctly Brazilian rhythm and flavour. Passionate, virtuoso, challenging, charming and fun, this concert will communicate the essence of Brazilian music. Featuring Adriano Adewale (percussion/xylophone), Marcelo Andrade (Flutes and Sax) and Jonathan Preiss (7 string acoustic guitar). a fabulous range of sounds and rhythms reminiscent of the great Airto Moreira’s magic but with a personality of its own. Oil City slickers Dr Feelgood are back at Bures this year by popular demand. The legendary rhythm ‘n’ blues outfit from Canvey Island took the 2004 Bures Blues Night by storm and since then have continued to blaze a trail across the continent and beyond. 2010 is proving to be their busiest year for quite some time. Interest in the group is now higher than it’s been since the late, great Lee Brilleaux’s passing in 1994 and the charismatic founder member would be mighty proud of what the current line-up has achieved over the last decade or so.

We had a few misgivings about styling the evening as a Swing concert at all, truth be told, for there are numerous other influences that shape the sound of this London based septet who celebrated fifteen years in show business during 2009. But if those influences are Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Louis Jordan, Jools Holland and Dr John all you’ll need to know is that you are in for a treat as a capacity crowd dances the night away on Bures Rec. A typical Red Stripe party night then? Jokes, hilarity, boogie woogie, glamour and energy -lots and lots of it! in the words of the band’s leader Neil Drinkwater (aka Red Stripe) who plays piano and sings. He’s joined by Gemma Nelson on vocals, tenor player Martin Gray, Erica Clarke on baritone saxophone, trumpeter Mike Nicholls, Costa Tancredi on bass and Ed Williams on drums.

Arguably the greatest English folk song performer, writer, collector and editor of them all’ Q Magazine For more than 40 years Martin Carthy has been one of folk music’s greatest innovators, one of its best loved, most enthusiastic and, at times, most quietly controversial of figures. His skill, stage presence and natural charm have won him many admirers, not only from within the folk scene, but also far beyond it.
Trailblazing musical partnerships with, amongst others, Steeleye Span, Dave Swarbrick and his award-winning wife (Norma Waterson) and daughter Eliza Carthy have resulted in more than 40 albums, but Martin has only recorded 10 solo albums, of which the much anticipated Waiting for Angels is the latest. Whether in the folk clubs (which he continues to champion), on the concert stage or making TV appearances (he was the subject of the acclaimed `Originals’ music documentary strand on BBC 2) – there are few roles that Martin Carthy hasn’t played. He’s a ballad singer, a ground-breaking acoustic and electric-guitarist and an authoritative interpreter of newly composed material.
He always prefers to follow an insatiable musical curiosity rather than cash in on his unrivalled position. Perhaps, most significant of all, are his settings of traditional songs with guitar, which have influenced a generation of artists, including Bob Dylan and Paul Simon, on both sides of the Atlantic. Martin Carthy was awarded the MBE for services to English Music and won Singer of the Year and Best Traditional Track at the BBC Radio 2 Awards 2005.
This is what the BBC website has to say about Martin Carthy and his award: For four decades, Martin Carthy’s work has immeasurably enriched the British folk heritage. He is regarded as one of the finest singers and interpreters of traditional music of the British Isles, as well as a highly influential and much-imitated guitarist. Awarded the MBE for services to English folk music in 1998, his drive and enthusiasm are undiminished and he continues to be one of folk music’s great innovators. PLEASE NOTE: DOORS OPEN: 7pm, MUSIC STARTS AT 9pm. The venue comprises both seated and standing space. There are a limited number of tables. These are allocated on a first come first served basis, with priority given to diners. If you’d like a table, please ensure you arrive early. NO ENTRY AFTER 9.30pm.
